With a wide variety of foliage colors usually in the rich deep burgundy realm, and sometimes cream and pink edges, ajuga makes a beautiful groundcover. The foliage is generally crinkled and very glossy as well. However, if you think this is just a foliage plant, you would get quite the surprise as spring eases into summer. Then, ajuga is covered in little spikes of bright blue, purple, pink or white blossoms.

Charming pink-white flowers provide a showy spring display, then produce large, showy red fruit with exceptional flavor and crispness. Great for fresh eating, cooking or pressing for cider. Stores well in cool conditions. Plant another apple variety such as 'Red Delicious' or 'Fuji' for best fruit set. Recommended chill: 800 hours. Deciduous.

Green Giant Arborvitae Thuja standishii x plicata 'Green Giant' The green giant arborvitae is a large, vigorous, fast-growing evergreen shooting up by as much as 3 feet per year until maturity. Its natural pyramidal to conical form boasts dense, rich green foliage that darkens or bronzes slightly in the winter.

Easy-to-grow asters come in a variety of shapes and sizes to suit gardens of all dimensions, shapes, and styles especially cutting gardens and sunny or lightly shaded borders. Although a few species bloom in early spring, most put on a spectacular flower display, supported by evergreen foliage, from late summer well into fall when other summer blooms may be fading.

Tall, feathery, white blooms above compact, deep bronze-green foliage. Valued for their airy quality, the flowers are excellent for cutting. A handsome, compact shrub with colorful coral-orange foliage that lasts into autumn, then turns a brilliant mix of bright orange to brick red, accented with gold margins. Excellent as an accent, or plant in groupings in a low maintenance landscape. Rarely produces seedlings. Vigorous and hardy into USDA zone 3 with winter protection. Deciduous.

Bellflowers are a diverse group of plants that come in many sizes and varieties. From diminutive alpine species to upright woodland varieties perfect for cut flowers, there are a number of plants to choose from. However, they all have their signature bell-shape blossoms in common. These cheery little bells grace plants for long periods of time, generally starting in late spring and continuing through summer. No matter what type of garden setting you have, you are bound to find a bellflower that fits your needs.

Graceful, delicate branches combined with small leaves and peeling bark (on some species) make sure that birch trees amp up a landscape's appeal. They're especially dramatic when planted as an allee (in rows on either side of a path), in a grove, or near water where their impact is doubled in reflection. As medium to large trees, members of the birch family can be incorporated into large suburban residential landscapes with relative ease. Many native species provide welcome habitat for local wildlife. Birch trees generally thrive in moist, well-drained soil and cool, moderate climates. They struggle to survive in hot, dry regions.

Also known as windflower, anemones are grown for their beautiful, nodding blooms on long, wiry stems. The foliage looks similar between varieties, but size and bloom times vary between spring, summer, or fall. Fall-blooming Japanese anemones are particularly noteworthy because they fill the midsummer-to-fall gap in gardens.

This is America's favorite snacking Apple! Prepare yourself for an extra crunchy, mildly sweet, flavorful apple; home grown Red Delicious are much tastier than those you will find in the supermarket. A tough and adaptable North American native with a profusion of small white flowers in spring, followed by shiny purple-black, showy berries that will persist throughout winter, and brilliant red fall foliage. This low-growing, mounding, deciduous shrub is excellent for use as a groundcover or edging, and tolerates a range of soil and climate conditions.

Aronia/Chokeberry

Astible is a knockout plant, thanks to its ornamental, fern-like bronze-and-green foliage and its feathery plumed blossoms that look good both in season and dried for winter interest. Just make sure to keep astilbe moist, or its delicate foliage will scorch in the sun.

Enjoy up to five months of blooms with this wonderful selection! Large flowers appear in April, then rebloom in early July, continuing through fall until hard frost. Even high summer temperatures don't stop this beauty from producing loads of late summer and fall flowers. The evergreen foliage is disease resistant, and maintains excellent color year-round. Performs well in containers. Great for borders, foundation plantings and woodland gardens.

Orange-red sheaths at each node add color to the green culms (stems) of this well-contained plant. A perfect specimen for smaller gardens and courtyards. Leaves do not curl in the sun as with some bamboos. Thrives in cooler summer regions, even tolerating mild, periodic dry spells when established. Evergreen

A wonderful landscape tree with flaky white bark and terrific fall color. The graceful, arching, open-branched pyramidal form when young matures to a stately oval to rounded form in time. Toothy, diamond-shaped foliage emerges glossy green in spring. Distinctive peeling bark provides an interesting landscape element, especially in winter. Deciduous.

Attractive mid-sized tree with showy, pale pink flowers in spring followed by tasty, bright golden fruit. Enjoy crisp, juicy apples fresh off the tree or for cooking. Shimmering emerald green foliage with a classic narrow, pyramidal form make the emerald arborvitae attractive in all seasons. And unlike other arborvitaes, this cultivar keeps its lustrous color even in the cold winter months. The slow-growing emerald arborvitae is great for specimen or accent planting, hedges, privacy screens, and shelterbelts. It also makes a good foundation plant.

Dancers in the garden, aspens are popular choices for fast-growing windbreaks, screens, and mass plantings. Their oval leaves flutter in the slightest breeze. These extremely cold-hardy trees can gain almost 5 feet in height per year. Avoid problems with their invasive roots and suckering by selecting species and varieties that won't run rampant. Enjoy the best fall color with the quaking aspen. The trees have a preference for moist, well-drained soil but they adapt to almost any soil.

Berberis thunbergii 'Atropurpurea Nana' is one of the most commonly grown types. It offers purple foliage through the summer that turns bold red in fall. It grows 3 feet tall and wide. Zones 5-8
